How to be a Buddy!
Cool! If you're reading this it means you're interested in being
a Buddy. I can use all the new Buddies I can get.
First of all, Jerome's Home is about Scottish Folds. If you aren't
a Scottish Fold, please don't ask to be a Buddy. There are lots
of other cat sites where you can submit pictures. And since this
is a site about Scottish Fold cats, not people, pick a picture with no humans in it. Try to select
a picture that shows off your beautiful Fold self with a minimum
of clutter.
Scottish Folds come in two varieties: with folded ears like me
or with straight ears like my little brother Gizmo. Both are welcome
on the Buddies pages. In fact, Gizmo thinks we should have some
more straight ears, so please all you straight-eared Folds send
in your pics!
You must be able to submit your picture electronically. I'm sorry,
but we're just not willing to take on any risk of damage to hard
copy photos. Personally, I like to leave little teeth marks in
magazines and book covers and to lick things I think are interesting.
Plus, the US Postal Service has been known to lose or mangle mail.
If you're a graphics geek, just go for it. You know what to do.
If not, then when you scan, here are some guidelines:
File Format - Native Photoshop format (.psd) is preferred. If you don't have
that, .tif or .bmp or PICT (for Mac) will work. If you don't have
any of these, let me know what you do have and I'll try to figure
out if I can work with it. Don't send .jpg unless that's your
only option and then be sure to use the highest possible quality
setting. Whatever you do, don't use .gif, as that format is limited
to 256 colors and doesn't do justice to photos.
File Size - Since I like a little elbow room to play with, start with a
scan around 250K. This will yield a decent quality .jpg of around
25K as an end result. While 72dpi is standard resolution for web
work, it helps to start higher, say 100-150dpi. Perceived "size"
depends on what resolution you run your monitor at (I use 640x480)
but anywhere from 500-600 pixels wide will work nicely. If you
have a digital camera, use the largest size available. My Mavica
takes 1024x768 jpegs which look excellent when sampled down to
~500.
Crop Prudently - There's no point in sending a file that's 80% background. On
the other hand, be careful not to chop off any body parts. I can't
just "clone" them back in. I can usually remove a stray chair
leg or such and may decide to mask you out and put you into a
cool new background.
Pick your best picture and send just that one for starters. If
you have additional pictures and think you'd like to be a "featured
buddy" with an entire page devoted to you, describe what your
storyline would be and what's unique about the other pictures.
Since "featured buddy" pages can represent considerable work on
this end, there are entirely at my discretion.
Thanks for you interest in being a Buddy. The "Buddies" section
has become the most popular part of Jerome's Home. So fire up
that scanner or digital camera and I hope to hear from you real
soon! And be sure to tell me a little bit about yourself and where
you're from.
P.S. I think it would be cool to have an all "Buddha Buddies"
page. All you Folds who do "the sit", come on, get those pictures
in! |
